Columbus United Soccer Club teams had considerable success in early spring tournament play the weekend of February 25th-26th. Teams were medalists in three different tournaments in two different states. United DOC Tom Velek remarked, “United teams took on teams from across the southeast in tournaments spanning the state of Mississippi and Alabama and in doing so competed at the highest level.”

The United U12 girls’ team earned an impressive championship at the highly competitive Raising Canes Spring Classic Hattiesburg. The team, coached by McGee Ledbetter and assisted by Jim Hicks and Mickie Pilferman, was undefeated on its road to the championship match. The team beat Rankin Soccer Club 8-0, Gulf Coast United 3-2, and had its second shutout against Laurel Jones, 1-0. In the championship United faced the host team. They prevailed over HFC 1-0 to secure the gold.

At the other end of the state, the United U9 boys brought home a silver medal from the Tupelo Spring Classic. United defeated North Alabama SC in it opening match and then rode a trio of hard-fought draws and a dominating win to earn 2nd place in the round-robin bracket. The team played eventual champion Tupelo Futbol Club (TFC) to a 1-1 draw, IFC (Jackson) 2-2, and Lobos Rush to a 2-2 draw. The team is coached by Jerry Frost and Chad Graham.

In Alabama the United U13/14 boy’s team earned finalist honors. The team played the Auburn Thunder (AL) to a 0-0 draw and defeated host team Vestavia Hills 2-0 to earn a trip to the championship match. In the championship the team was defeated in a tense match by Gulfport South SC. The team is coached by Dave Albertson and Will Starks.
