Teams from Columbus United Soccer Club had a very successful weekend at the Frostbite Tournament
February 6 th -7 th . A total of six teams competed in competitive divisions with five earning medals. United
also had three teams from its U8 Development Program in non-competitive brackets.
The United U11 boys, U11 girls, and u12 girls all finished the tournament as champions. The U11 boys
coached by Jim Hicks and Jamie Baucom won in dramatic fashion over Saltillo FC. The championship
match was tied at the end of regulation, tied at the end of two overtime periods, and was decided by
penalty kicks. The team will next be in action at the Tupelo Spring Classic.
The U12 boys dominated the competition throughout the tournament, allowing only three goals
throughout over the course of the weekend. They defeated Tupelo Futbol Club-Amory by a score of 4-1
in the championship match. The team, coached by Dave Albertson and Will Starks, is in action again this
weekend at the Vestavia Invitational.
On the girls side the United U11 and U12 girls made their respective ways through the tournament to
meet each other in the championship match. The U11 girls coached by McGee Ledbetter bested the U12
girls coached by Danny Loyd and Jaz Romain by a score of 6-2. The U11 girls will join the United
contingent at Vestavia Hills for its next tournament, while the U12 girls travel to Tupelo at the end of the
month.
The u10 girls coached by Allie McCulley finished as tournament finalists. They defeated Saltillo FC,
Starkville White, and SSA Maroon. The only loss of the tournament was to eventual champion Meridian
Alliance. The team is next in action in Brandon, MS at the BFC Spring Kick-Off.
United also had three teams from its U8 Development Program in action. The two boys teams are
coached by John Tuggle and Jason Spears and the girls team is coached by Layla Wilson. They will next
be in action in Tupelo. The United U10 boys also competed in the tournament. They are coached by
Chris Mackey and Curt Rogers.
