Teams from Columbus United Soccer Club and CSO’s U8 Development Program completed a highly successful Holiday Classic Tournament this past weekend in Starkville. All teams were competitive in their brackets with four out of the five teams finding their way onto the podium. United DOC Tom Velek remarked “It was one of the best showings for the club. The progress we have made in coaching, player development, and team development is evident.”
The U8 Development Girls team lead the way with a finalist finish competing in the boy’s division. The team is coached by Allie McCulley. The United U10 girls team coached by McGee Ledbetter also medaled. After dropping its first match 1-2 to Tupelo Futbol Club the team bounced with a win over Greenwood Delta Red Bulls. They finished the tournament playing eventual champion Oxford Flood to a 1-1 draw.
The United u13 girls took the championship in spectacular fashion. The team finished the tournament with three wins and three shutouts. Starkville and Greenwood both fell to the United squad as they racked up 8 goals for the tournament without any scored against. The team coached is coached by Lee Milam and Jen Prouty.
On the boy’s side the United U12 Boys coached by Dave Albertson and Will Starks were finalists. The team recorded impressive wins over Tupelo Futbol Club-Amory and Corinth before dropping to the championship match to Oxford Flood. The United U10 Boys coached by Jim Hicks finished the tournament with a 1-1-1 record and a third place finish in the bracket. The tournament included a thrilling match in which they played eventual champion Tupelo FC to a 2-2 draw.
Most United teams will be back in action for the Frostbite Tournament in January.
